For more than twenty years, many South Sudanese refugees have made Uganda their home after enduring the trauma of war, loss, and displacement. The cumulative weight of these experiences has left many feeling hopeless, sad, and indifferent. Some have lost the resilience that once sustained them and have come to depend heavily on aid, living day by day with little expectation that tomorrow can be better. Their mindsets have been deeply affected by prolonged hardship.
At Khayamandi Uganda, we do not rush to judge these realities. Instead, we choose empathy. We have committed ourselves to an “arms-around” approach—walking alongside refugees and their host communities on a shared journey of healing, restoration, and empowerment.
We also deeply appreciate the host communities who have opened their homes and land to the refugees. Many of these hosts are not materially better off than the people they have welcomed, yet they have shared their most valuable asset—land—with remarkable generosity and kindness. That sacrifice moves us and strengthens our resolve to support both the refugees and the communities that have received them.
Jesus’ words remain our guide: “Love one another as I have loved you” (John 13:34).
One practical expression of this commitment is the NewLife Children’s Ministry Center. There we support 400 kindergarten children, employ 7 Ugandan staff members, and provide work for 15 South Sudanese refugees. In total, 22 adults now have the dignity of meaningful employment while the children receive a stronger educational foundation than many would otherwise have access to.
What encourages us most is not only the jobs themselves, but the environment we have helped create. Refugees and host-community members work side by side in harmony and collaboration. Rather than competing or fighting, they have embraced a simple truth: we are better together!
They have taken to heart the well-known African proverb:
“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”
They are now engaged in productive work and serve their communities with purpose.
We know the journey of healing and reconciliation is far from finished. Yet we are grateful that we are no longer where we once were.
Onwards and upwards—as we continue to bring hope, restore dignity, and create opportunities that lead to lasting empowerment.
